Two men died Friday night in a crash on Butts Canyon Road when their car, for reasons that remain under investigation, spun out of control, hit rocks and tumbled down a 50-foot embankment, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash was reported at about 10 p.m., 1.3 miles north of James Creek Road. The men were traveling from Middletown toward Angwin, according to the CHP.
The two occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.
On Saturday, the Napa County Sheriff’s Office identified one of the two men as Ernest Crain, 54, of Angwin. He is the son of longtime Angwin residents Richard and Lilly Crain.
CalFire firefighters from Middletown found the car still burning when they arrived at the scene at about 10:30 p.m., said CalFire representative Suzie Blankenship. The fire, which was put out in about five minutes, burned about 10 feet of grass around the vehicle, which had come to a stop by a tree.
The accident remains under investigation.
