Biker Safety Tips and Precautions

Motorcycle riders must safely share the road with cars, trucks and other vehicles. To prevent injuries and accidents, preventative measures should be taken by all drivers. Riding a motorcycle is more hazardous than other types of vehicles due to the absence of a seat belt and the lower visibility. Consider these simple, yet highly effective, biker tips and safety precautions the next time you take a ride on your motorcycle.

Always Wear a Helmet

Your motorcycle helmet is the most important piece of safety equipment you can wear while riding. Helmet laws require all bikers under the age of 21 to wear a helmet while operating a motorcycle, although riders of all ages should wear a helmet for protection. Ensure that your helmet fits correctly, has no cracks and is the highest quality that you can afford. Also check inside the helmet for a DOT label, meaning that it meets the standards set by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Ride Properly

Riding a motorcycle is similar to riding a vehicle and should be treated in the same manner. Sit up straight and ride at a pace that is comfortable for you, as well as within the set speed limit. Just like riding a vehicle, motorcycle riders must practice their skills and pass a driving test before they can acquire a license. Motorcycle safety riding courses are highly beneficial to strengthen your skills and to become more comfortable behind the handlebars. It’s also important to know your personal limits as you ride.

Watch for No-Zones

No-zones are areas in which your motorcycle should never be, such as in the blind spot of other vehicles. Trucks have large blind sports on both sides of the vehicle, as well as in the front and in the back. When you ride your motorcycle in these blind spots, the truck driver is not able to see you in his mirrors, drastically increasing your risk of getting into an accident. Avoid no-zones and keep your distance from other drivers, as well as in construction zones and other areas that could cause you problems.

Limit Distractions

Driving a motorcycle can bring about a plethora of distractions, from changes in weather to bike passengers. Limit distractions that could cause you to get into an accident, such as mobile phones, foods and drinks and personal grooming as you ride. Any loose cargo, including luggage, extra helmets or bags should be securely fastened to the bike or not brought onto the motorcycle at all. It’s also important to keep your motorcycle in excellent condition, meaning regular checkups on tires, brakes and lights.

Additional Safety Tips

Motorcycle riders have less protection than drivers in cars, vans and trucks. To keep yourself safe as you ride, there are several things you should always do. Wear protective gear, including your helmet, gloves and leather to protect your skin. Ride at a safe speed and avoid the center lane where oil and debris tends to build. Keep your headlights on as you ride and never drive if you’ve been drinking. Always keep an eye out for other drivers, especially around intersections and when entering highways
