DUI Driver Kills Fremont Pedestrian -- Dec 8, 2017

Police arrested a driver of an SUV Friday after his car hit a cargo trailer and a fire hydrant, killing a pedestrian in Fremont. Police responded at approximately 10 a.m. to reports of a crash on Argonaut Way, south of Mowry Avenue, said Fremont police. When officers arrived, they found the pedestrian dead. The driver of a Nissan Rouge SUV was unconscious and suffering from major injuries. The victim was 44-year-old Yani Leppanen, the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau confirmed. Authorities said Leppanen had a Huntington Beach address. Medical rescue personnel transported the driver, identified as Fremont resident Robert Greer Jr., 57-years-old, to the medical center, where he was later arrested on suspicion of DUI of drugs triggering serious bodily injury and manslaughter. Investigators believe the driver was headed south on Argonaut Way when he lost control of his car. He struck Leppanen, while he was moving a piano from the cargo trailer into a home on Argonaut Way. Leppanen’s cargo trailer, which was attached to a pick-up truck was struck. He also struck a fire hydrant.
