A suspected drunk driver was taken into custody early Sunday after his vehicle collided with a patrol car being driven by a Garden Grove officer, authorities said.

Around 3:40 a.m., the unidentified officer was traveling north on Knott Street when an oncoming driver headed southbound crossed over into northbound lanes near Stanford Avenue, according to a news release from the Garden Grove Police Department.

The officer made an evasive maneuver to avoid crashing into the other vehicle, but the cars ended up colliding, police officials stated in the release.

Both vehicles sustained major damages in the crash.
