Highway 1 Closed Due to Fatal DUI Accident
Near Moss Landing on highway 1, close to Molera Road, a DUI with fatalities closed both lanes just after noon on Monday, March 21,2016. Authorities feel drugs and alcohol may have played a factor.
A black colored Lexus, traveling southbound and apparently speeding when she rolled down her window to discard a cigarette butt, according to the California Highway Patrol, which caused her to veer into oncoming traffic. She smashed into a silver Mazda carrying one passenger, a male, who died as a result of his injuries.
The Lexus drier was Lynnea Hernandez, 19, of Santa Cruz. She was carrying six passengers. Five of the women in the car admitted to smoking pot before making the trip and during transit. Hernandez also admitted to taking her prescription meds at approximately 12 noon. She was arrested for driving under the influence. Three of the passengers were students at UC Santa Cruz and the others were visitors from Colorado. Another resident of Santa Cruz, Sarah Cameron, 19, was also arrested for concealing and/or destroying evidence after a makeup bag containing Marijuana and Ecstasy was found in the field.
The driver who was killed has not yet been identified.
