A 2-year-old girl died Sunday afternoon from injuries sustained during a Wednesday hit-and-run car crash that killed her grandmother, landed her mother and brother in the hospital, and led to the arrest of a Costa Mesa man on vehicular manslaughter charges.

Kaydence Hampton of Lake Forest, who was identified by the Orange County Coroner Division, died at 2:20 p.m. at a local hospital. Her mother, 28, and brother, 7, remain hospitalized in stable condition.

Irvine police and Orange County Fire Authority officials responded to a three-car crash around 9 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Muirlands Boulevard and Alton Parkway. Details on how the crash occurred have not been released, but based on witness statements, police said they are investigating the possibility that it was related to street racing.

The collision killed Katherine Hampton, 54, of Lake Forest at the scene, while her adult daughter, grandson and granddaughter all initially survived and were taken to the hospital. OCFA officials said both children suffered cardiac arrest at the time. The boy later stabilized, but the girl did not.
