LATHROP — Two people died in a fiery crash when their disabled vehicle was struck by a big rig late Monday night in Lathrop, the California Highway Patrol said.

The collision occurred about 10:20 p.m. on southbound Interstate 5 just south of Roth Road, officers said. Juan Martinez, 43, of Merced was driving a 2013 Freightliner south on the interstate and traveling about 55 mph when he moved from the No. 2 lane to the No. 3 lane, officers said.

Seconds later, Martinez noticed a Ford stopped in the No. 3 lane for unknown reasons and saw a man standing to the right side of the vehicle, the CHP said. Martinez was unable to avoid a collision with the Ford, officers said.
