A Napa man was killed in a Monday morning crash on Highway 29 involving a VINE bus.

California Highway Patrol said the man was driving a green Saturn about 5:30 a.m. 3 miles north of Yountville when he attempted to legally pass a car that was also traveling north.

But the driver, a man in his late 40s, didn't see a VINE bus traveling in the opposite direction, Sgt. William Bradshaw said. The driver of the Saturn tried to swerve at the last second, but the two vehicles collided head-on.

Except for the driver, the bus was empty, Bradshaw said.

Bradshaw said the fog was about 100 feet aboveground and wasn't a factor. Neither driver was speeding.
