Testosterone Safety Alert
Testosterone is a hormone involved in sustaining sex drive, muscle mass, as well as bone health and energy levels. It is commonplace for testosterone levels to decrease for all men as they age. It is widely recognized that for most men this is completely natural and not something that requires medical treatment.
The Food and Drug Administration issued a safety warning on January 31, 2014 concerning FDA approved testosterone products. The warning was issued to inform the public that two previously approved testosterone products may have a chance of causing stroke, heart attack and death. Two studies of men prescribed testosterone therapies were found to have higher risk.
The products in question were only prescribed to men with low testosterone or a lack of testosterone that also had an accompanying medical condition. The products were not prescribed to any men who only had a lack of or low testosterone levels. The products took various forms including topical gel, transdermal patch, or as an injection. It was also found in a buccal system, which is applied to upper gum or inner cheek.
The two studies that prompted the safety alert were in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Both studies found increased risks for heart disease in both older and younger men who used the products. Both studies involved men with preexisting heart disease. They were conducted in 2013.
The alert further stated the research was ongoing and more would be disclosed as it was discovered. More testing and research is being done on the effects of testosterone on men in varying age brackets with a variety of different medical conditions.

Testosterone replacement therapy is recommended for only specific cases and can easily be misused.
