Wrong-way Crash on Sacramento Freeway Kills Two — Feb 7, 2017

A woman going the wrong way on Interstate 80 Tuesday crashed head-on into another car, killing her and a man from West Sacramento. It was just before 10 p.m. on eastbound I80 close to Northgate Boulevard when the crash occurred. The woman, in a dark colored Ford Mustang was driving westbound in the eastbound lane at Watt Avenue when she sideswiped another car close to Raley Boulevard. When she got close to Northgate Boulevard she hit a Dodge Challenger driven by a man head-on in the fast lane. Both drivers were killed. The man has been identified as Fernando Bravo Maya of West Sacramento, 24-years-old. The woman’s name has not yet been released.

Only days earlier, the California Department of Transportation launched a test program in Sacramento to add additional safety measures at a few specific off-ramps to determine their usefulness at stopping wrong way drivers. Some of the things they are trying include are cameras, red pavement reflectors, blinking lights and more wrong-way signs. There are 17 test ramps in Sacramento on Highway 50 in Sacramento County all the way through eastward to Howe Avenue, Highway 80 in Yolo County and downtown on Interstate 5.
